Space Robotics

We bring our activities to your school

To ease children's participation in science activities, our team goes to the school, so there is no need to hire expensive buses to travel to other centers.

Whom is this for?

  • Primary Education: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th

How long is it?

It usually takes about two hours (we can make it longer or shorter if necessary).

What is it?

It is an interactive workshop during which students will acquire basic knowledge about robotics and put them in to practice by constructing each one their own robot. They will have a unique opportunity to explore the universe of robotics adapted to their level. An experience that will arouse their curiosity and start them in a world of possibilities. While they learn, more than one will find its vocation.

What will we learn?

Space Robotics is crucial in Space Exploration. Thanks to robotics we can access places that, due to their extreme conditions, can not be explored by humans yet. Robots can also do repetitive or risky tasks to ease astronauts' life at the International Space Station (ISS).

Young “engineers” will get to know about the different robots that help us explore the Space and about the space agencies that design and build them.

They will also learn about the parts of a robot and their function.

Topics:

  • Introduction to Robotics.
  • Rovers.
  • Energy: the different energy sources that can be used in robotics.
  • Physical Structure: the different structures that a robot can have.
  • Control Unit: essential for the communications between Earth and robot explorers.
  • Sensors: similarities between living creatures senses and robots sensors such as infrared, ultrasound, microphone, light sensor, temperature sensor, humidity sensor...
  • Actuators: very important parts for our robot to be fully functional, it will need wheels, motors, speakers, LEDs and other elements.

Other things we will learn:

  • Social and speaking abilities.
  • Teamwork.
  • Attention skills.
  • Fine motor skill.

How the activity works:

The structure of the activity is:

  • Short lesson about robotics:
    • What a robot is
    • What can it be used for
    • Parts of a robot
    • Applications in Earth
    • Applications in Space
  • Building a robot:
    • Propulsion
    • Sensors

Methodology:

By building robots, which is the main task of this activity, we encourage in a playfull way their interest in robotics and technology.

The workshop is adapted to the age of the students, increasing the difficulty of the robot that they are to build.

Our methodology is based on:

  • Small groups (to assure the success of the workshop, we make groups never bigger than 12-15 kids for each monitor)
  • Learn practicing (building a robot on their own is the most important part of the experience)
  • Each one should learn at their own rhythm (the monitors will help the students always respecting their rhythm)
  • Organization (we emphasize the importance of order and organization while working)
  • Teamwork (we emphasize the importance of teamwork, the division of tasks, and the role of each member of a group)
  • It is ok to make a mistake (students will understand that noticing our mistakes helps us move forward)

Essential requirements:

  • Hall or a classroom with tables and chairs.
  • The location must be confortable and should accommodate the number of children that will take part in the activity.
